Star FM About Us

First turning our microphone on 1 July 2021, Star FM is a youth-driven community radio station broadcasting to Johannesburg’s northern ‘burbs.

With a star-studded line-up (see what we did there) we aim to have fun, be inclusive and real, while we inform, inspire, make waves in our community and of course, play you The Best Local Music and More!

We are also passionate about supporting future radio superstars, which we aim to do through our Radio Training Academy – previously the Hot 91.9FM Radio Training Academy.

The free 6-month course is a sustainable mentorship course feeding young talent to the broadcasting industry and an example of our commitment to our community and uplifting the youth. The academy offers an intensive hands-on programme with weekly lectures – which due to COVID safety precautions will resume in 2022.

OUR SHOWS

Greg and Lucky in the Mornings

Get your day Started with Greg and Lucky in the Mornings. The popular duo returns to the radio with a fast-paced and fun breakfast show. “Fun, real and ridiculously good looking” are two of the three things that Greg and Lucky promise from their show.  Expect pace, energy, bellyaches and tearyness, just because you know a breakfast show just CANNOT get better than this!
Greg and Lucky have been making radio magic since 2013. These two friends have done it all from interviewing superstars to the downright bizarre (that includes The Foo Fighters, David Beckham and that one time they went to watch 50 Shades of Grey with their moms).
But they don’t have their heads in the clouds, they have it in the STARS. They’re down to earth, fun and always up for a good time. You’ll definitely win them over with a great story, fun game and interesting facts.
Lucky is the proudest father of 2 and a patriotic rugby fan through and through. He believes in what’s right and loves a good laugh… even if it is at someone who has just tripped.
Greg can’t help being a sceptic. He loves his wife and beer equally… which says a lot for both of them. Lucky thinks he has a terrible taste in music but it doesn’t dampen Greg’s vibe.

Starring you… and Mzi

From entertainment to informative and inspirational topics, Mzi brings a different dynamic ensuring you feel like you have a companion that understands your needs. Look forward to a healthy dose of pure awesomeness with a dash of your daily 10-track music sweep to get you into a great mood and to keep those energy levels flowing.

Mzi’s curiosity about radio started at the tender age of 4 when a teacher first recorded his voice on cassette. After studying radio broadcast engineering at The Academy of Sound Engineering, Mzi decided to revive those childhood dreams and step up to the mic. After completing the Hot 91.9 FM Radio Training Academy, Mzi joined the ranks of Hot 91.9 FM station and now shares his good vibes with Star FM.
